Floors for a Growing City

North Port covers about 104 square miles, making it the largest city in Sarasota County by area, and it is also the county’s most populous city. The 2020 Census counted 74,793 residents, up from 57,357 in 2010. North Port was incorporated in 1959, and most of the land was platted by the General Development Corporation into lots for single-family homes, a pattern you still see across the city.

That growth means a wide range of houses: homes from the 1970s and 1980s next to homes built in the last few years. Each comes with different flooring questions.

Upgrading the Floors in a Newer Home

Newer homes often come with practical but basic finishes: small floor tile in the main areas and carpet in the bedrooms. A common upgrade is to replace both with one continuous floor, such as large porcelain tile or wood-look planks, so the house reads as one open space.

The detail that decides how that turns out is the transition. Carpet sits on a pad, tile sits on mortar, and their heights do not match. When the new floor runs through bedrooms, hallways and the main living area, the layout should start from the most visible line, usually the front entry or the main living room, and carry straight through.

Concrete Slabs, Old and New

Concrete shrinks as it cures, and hairline shrinkage cracks are common in slabs of any age. Most are stable. A crack that has shifted in height or keeps widening is different and needs attention before tile goes over it.

For stable cracks, a crack isolation membrane under the tile is a common approach: it lets the slab move slightly without passing that movement into the tile. In an older home, the first step is often removing the existing floor and its adhesive to see what the slab actually looks like.

Shower Updates in North Port Homes

If your home has a prefabricated fiberglass or acrylic shower, replacing it with a tiled walk-in shower is one of the most noticeable bathroom upgrades. The project involves removing the unit, rebuilding the walls with backer board and a waterproofing membrane, and sloping a new shower floor to the drain. See our shower remodeling page for how the layers fit together.

Questions From North Port Homeowners

Do you work in all parts of North Port?

North Port is one of our seven service areas. Because the city covers a large area, mention your neighborhood or cross streets when you request an estimate, and we will confirm the details.

Can I replace carpet in the bedrooms to match my existing tile?

Sometimes. Finding an exact match for older tile is often difficult, because colors and sizes are discontinued. Many homeowners choose to replace the floor in all connected rooms at once so everything matches.

My slab has hairline cracks. Can I still get tile?

Hairline shrinkage cracks are common and usually stable. They are typically treated before tile, often with a crack isolation membrane. Cracks that have shifted in height should be looked at first. We can discuss this at your free estimate.
